Crystal (single)

Crystal (single)

Crystal was the first single to be released from the 2001 New Order album Get Ready, which entered the UK charts at number 8. Singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner originally gifted the song to German record label Mastermind for Success and it was recorded by label artist Corvin Dalek. However, DJ Pete Tong heard the song and declared it to be the best New Order single since "Blue Monday", leading Sumner to reconsider the gift and have New Order record and release it. The video, directed by Johan Renck (otherwise known as Stakka Bo) depicted a young American band miming to New Order's music and words, with a large number of people coming on stage towards the end to pull them off stage. This video is directly responsible for the name of the band The Killers, as that name was written on the bass drum of the fake band in the video. The Killers later lifted a number of elements of the layout of the set from the "Crystal" video for the video for their track "Somebody Told Me". The DVD single contained an alternate video, set to the "Special Circumstances Mix" of the song, and directed by Gina Birch and Simon Tyszko. The video depicted a motorcycle ride through city streets at night, viewed through two side-by-side shots. The single was B-sided by a variety of remixes, and an original song titled "Behind Closed Doors". Bernard Sumner

Bernard Sumner (born January 4, 1956 in Salford, England) was the guitarist and keyboardist for Joy Division. After the May 1980 suicide of Joy Division's vocalist Ian Curtis, Sumner and remaining bandmates Peter Hook and Stephen Morris changed the name of the band to New Order, later taking in Gillian Gilbert. Though Hook, Morris and Gilbert also contributed vocals on some early tracks, Sumner emerged reluctantly as the band's permanent lead vocalist and lyricist. In 1989, Sumner joined up with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to form Electronic. He has also recorded tracks with fellow Mancunians 808 State and Sub Sub. Sumner appeared as a guest vocalist on The Chemical Brothers' 1999 album Surrender on the track "Out of Control". During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Sumner was also sometimes credited under the names "Bernard Albrecht," "Bernard Dicken" and "Bernard Albrecht-Dicken." In interviews, he has repeatedly refused to comment on these name changes, calling it a family matter. Fans have reported that originally he used his mother's surname Sumner, but upon her marriage, they both took the name Dicken. Later he changed it to Albrecht--perhaps to play off Joy Division's frequent references to Nazi themes, or in reference to Albrecht Dürer--then back to Sumner. He is comically known to friends and fans as "Barney", a name that is known to annoy him greatly. He was later portrayed by John Simm in the film 24 Hour Party People. After many years of drug abuse, he is now known to have used Prozac. As this was quoted from an interview for the "Raise the Pressure" album.

Pete Tong

Pete Tong (born July 1960) is a British DJ who works for BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom. He is known worldwide by fans of electronic music for hosting programs such as Essential Mix and Essential Selection on the radio service, which can be heard through Internet radio streams, for his label FFRR Records, and for his own performances at nightclubs across the globe. Tong has also worked as a music producer. The phrase "It's all gone a bit Pete Tong", where the name is used as cockney rhyming slang for "wrong", was reputedly first coined by Mark Radcliffe. However, on his show of 28th November 2005, Mark Radcliffe credited his erstwhile sidekick Mark "Lard" Riley with inventing the term. It's All Gone Pete Tong is also the title of a recent (2005) comedy film, which is somewhat biographical in its portrayal of a DJ's experiences as he realises that he is becoming deaf.

Early Years

Pete Tong was born in Dartford Kent during July 1960 and was educated at the King's School in Rochester. Pete's original musical interest was in drumming, but he soon moved on to DJing. He played his first public gig at a friend's wedding aged 15. While at school he and a couple of mates earned some extra money by promoting a couple of local bands, booking halls for gigs etc. He also worked for as part of the Kent 'Soul Mafia' bringing soul weekenders to seaside towns like Caister and Prestatyn. Initially after leaving school he set up a mobile disco based in a transit van, but he soon started his own club in Baker Street called [Family] Function. He also booked bands for an alternative night, the first of which was the then unknown Culture Club. In 1979 he became a staff writer for Blues & Soul magazine. After a year he was promoted to features editor, a position he would hold until 1983. He left Blues & Soul to join London Records as an A&R manager. Through his connections in London Records Pete was exposed to newly emerging house music sound from Chicago. After meeting with the owners of DJ International and Trax Records, Tong organised a 1986 compilation entitled The House Sound of Chicago, Vol. 1, the first British release to deal with this sound.

Radio Career

Pete's first appearance on Radio was in the early 80s when he appeared on local radio station BBC Radio Medway in the 'Soul Mafia' and doing occasional mixes for Radio London. Then in 1981 he made his first appearance on Radio 1 hosting a 15 minute feature on Peter Powell's show, playing the new tracks and covering the latest gossip and news from the dance world. When Invicta Radio started up in Kent in 1984, Pete joined them to host a regular soul show, where he stayed until 1987. He was then hired by Capital Radio to present a weekly dance program. Finally in 1991 Pete returned to national radio. As part of its desire to provide coverage for the growing club culture Radio 1 hired Pete to host the "Essential Selection". The Essential Selection is a three hour radio show on Friday nights from 6-9pm in the UK. Often referred to by Pete as the "weekend warmup," it showcases the latest dance music, with the focus being on house, and informs listeners what club nights are on around the United Kingdom that weekend. He still hosts the Essential Selection today, and is now the station's second longest serving DJ (after Annie Nightingale). Since 1993, he has also presented the Essential Mix on Saturday nights.

The Killers (band)

The Killers are a 21st Century synth rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, who formed in 2002. Lead singer and keyboardist Brandon Flowers was inspired to start the band in part after seeing Oasis perform at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel in April 2002. They released their hit record Hot Fuss in 2004. The band took their name from a New Order video titled "Crystal". It was featured on the bass drum of a fictional band in the video. Brandon Flowers went on to take to the stage at the 2005 T in the Park festival and perform "Crystal" with New Order.

History

In 2001, Brandon Flowers was abandoned by the first band that he was in, a synth pop band known as Blush Response, after he declined to move with the rest of them to Los Angeles, California. After he quit, Flowers responded to an ad in the Las Vegas Weekly by future guitarist David Keuning, about forming a band which was inspired by bands such as Oasis, The Cure, New Order, and The Smiths. They met and immediately clicked, and set out to find a drummer and a bassist. (The first bassist was Dave's room mate and the first drummer would later on sue The Killers, claiming that he wrote "Mr. Brightside".) After a few shows, they found Ronnie Vannucci and Mark Stoermer to fill the posts. Before they had become a band, all four of them had various jobs. Flowers, who had dropped out of college, was a bellhop for a while at the Gold Coast Hotel. David Keuning, who was originally from Pella, Iowa and had dropped out of Kirkwood Community College and then the University of Iowa, and moved to Las Vegas in January of 2000, worked at a Banana Republic store; Mark Stoermer worked as a medical courier delivering various medical supplies and was a student of philosophy at UNLV; Ronnie Vannucci was a student of classical percussion at UNLV and worked as a photographer at the Little Chapel of Flowers. The band first started playing at a Las Vegas gay/transgender night club called "Tramps". transgender UK magazine NME was an early champion of the band - reviewing early UK shows. The band became more well-known when they released their album Hot Fuss on June 7, 2004 in the United Kingdom (on London-based indie record label Lizard King Records) and June 15 in the United States on Island Records. They released their Japanese and French versions of the same album in late 2004. Their first single, "Somebody Told Me," was released on that same year. The band also had chart success with their singles "Mr. Brightside", which reached the Top 10 in the UK when released, and "All These Things That I've Done". The main bulk of their mainstream success came when they scored a number 3 chart position with their re-release of "Somebody Told Me". Much of The Killers' music is based on British influences and on the music of the 1980s, particularly New Wave music. Despite their appreciation for the wave of post-punk bands that sprung up during the 80's, the band members are also avowed fans of David Bowie, Queen and U2, and the influence of these bands can easily be felt in some of their songs. Brandon Flowers occasionally sings with a faux British accent. Since going platinum, the band (and prinicipally Flowers) has managed to incite a few rivalries - most notably with The Bravery and Fall Out Boy (FOB), which, ironically, are all labelmates (Island Records). Flowers has said that such bands, especially The Bravery, are riding on the coattails of the success of The Killers.[http://www.mtv.com/bands/m/music_geek/indierock_sissyfights_050905/] Additionally, in an article of NME, Flowers claimed FOB was hogging the A&R man both bands share, setting off FOB's bassist Pete Wentz. However, after Wentz made a couple rants on his blog in September of 2005, he offered a virtual cease-fire.[http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1511089/10072005/killers_the.jhtml] On December 1 2004 they appeared as guests on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and on December 2 2004, they made a guest appearance on the FOX television series The O.C.. On January 15, 2005 they were the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. In the past, they have appeared as musical guests on: Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pepsi Smash, The Late Show with David Letterman, and in Britain they have appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Later with Jools Holland. Most recently, on April 14, 2005, they appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. On May 12 and October 10, 2005, they performed throughout MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed. They performed for an episode of Austin City Limits that aired on November 5, 2005. The Killers performed at the 2005 Glastonbury festival on the Pyramid Stage, on Friday Night, after they turned down the Sunday headline spot when Kylie Minogue cancelled after being diagnosed with breast cancer. They turned down the offer, stating that they didn't think they were popular enough. However, they still managed to deliver an excellent performance, and attracted one of the biggest crowds at the festival. On the 2nd of July, The Killers performed at Hyde Park's Live 8 concert. They also performed at the T in the Park festival in Balado, Scotland on July 9th, during which, following The Killers' own set, Brandon Flowers performed "Crystal" with New Order - "Crystal" being the music video the band took their name from. Soon, they are jetting off to Vienna with U2, in order to support them on the European leg of their current Vertigo Tour. The Killers performed on the London stage of the Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005. They performed their song "All These Things That I've Done". To their surprise, Robbie Williams (who performed after them) incorporated the song's refrain "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" into his own performance. The band's second album is widely expected to be released in early summer 2006, two years after the release of Hot Fuss.

Controversy

Brandon Flowers, in an interview with several music magazines, claimed that the song "Where is she?" was based on Jodi Jones, a Scottish girl whose boyfriend, Luke Mitchell, was found guilty of her murder. Many, especially in Scotland, saw this as an insult to her memory, and the band gave a formal apology, telling the Sunday Herald: "I came across kind of badly. I'd hate to cause offence or further hurt because of it...There's no way on earth I could ever possibly pretend to know what it must actually feel like to suffer such a thing, and I wouldn't presume to appropriate any other individual's feelings for a song.".

Quotes

- “He was the only person to reply to my ad who wasn’t a complete freak... He came over with his keyboard and we started going through song ideas straight away. I had the verse to “Mr. Brightside” and he went away and wrote the chorus. That was the first song we wrote together and remains the only song that we’ve played at every single Killers' show.” – David Keuning commenting on Brandon Flowers
- "I’ve always had this thing about it not really mattering where you’re from, because there’s always been this big cloud over America saying you have to live in LA or you have to live in New York to make it. I always knew it didn’t matter as long as you had the songs." – Brandon Flowers on musical success
- "I think that the public hear their pop radio or whatever and they just get sick of bad music. They want to hear songs again." – Ronnie Vannucci
- "We want to be important and to last." – Brandon Flowers
- "People today are coming together as a family because our brothers and sisters in Africa need our help. So let's change their worlds." Brandon Flowers - Live 8, London, 2 July 2005

DVD single

A DVD single is a music single in the form of a DVD. The format was introduced in the late 90s/early 2000s. Although many record companies refused to issue CD singles, they readily issued DVD Singles, and some popular DVD singles include Jessica Simpson's "With You" and Beyonce's "Crazy in Love". The DVD single never really caught on in the USA, and many are out of print nowadays causing some to view them as collector items. The DVD single replaced the Video single.

War is over billboard

In late 1969, John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono rented billboards and posters in eleven cities world-wide that read "WAR IS OVER! (If You Want It) Happy Christmas from John and Yoko." At that time the United States was deeply entrenched in the Vietnam War, which would later become a major political debacle. Five of the eleven cities included in the Billboard campaign were New York, Tokyo, Rome, Amsterdam, and London.
